The History of Mountain Springs & Gooseneck Creek
Nestled in the scenic foothills of the Northern Oregon Coast Range, our property carries a rich legacy rooted in the pioneer spirit of the mid-1800s. Originally part of the historic Gooseneck Creek settlement area, this land transitioned from early Oregon Trail homesteads into a thriving agricultural and logging community. Over a century ago, early settlers were drawn to the region's abundant natural springs, rolling hills, and fertile valley floors. Today, the surrounding whispering timberlands and the gentle winding waters of Gooseneck Creek serve as a timeless backdrop, preserving the peaceful, wild beauty that has defined this rural Sheridan haven for generations.
At the heart of our venue stands a testament to Oregon’s early farming heritage. Built during the region's agricultural boom, classic heavy-timber barns like ours were hand-crafted from local Douglas fir to store loose hay, house livestock, and shelter farming families. Designed to work hand-in-hand with the sloping hillsides, these historic structures have stood the test of time, weathering decades of changing seasons. Beautifully preserved and mindfully restored, the barn bridges the past and the present—transforming a historic symbol of hard work and community gatherings into a romantic, rustic sanctuary where new love stories begin.
Our story…after a career working for the Federal Government and years serving in the Marines, we dreamed of finding a path to spending as much time in nature as possible. Since we retired, we traveled and found our perfect location in Oregon. With the help of family, we made the main home livable again. The beautiful barn, however, would take a lot more time and money. We spent the last few years dedicated to our mission of restoring the barn and the property’s rustic beauty. In the fall of 2023, we had our family’s first Barn Wedding. It was magical!
With our aim to recycle, reuse and recreate materials, we will leave the Barn, Stable and Dining Shed rustic, yet functional and affordable. We hope you enjoy the rustic charm of Mountain Springs Retreat.
